Dr. Pérez-Guzmán Named BBISS Faculty Fellow

The Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems (BBISS) has welcomed seven new Faculty Fellows, including our lab professor, Dr. Sofía Pérez-Guzmán.
BBISS Faculty Fellows serve three-year terms, receiving support for their sustainability-focused research while helping guide the Institute’s strategic direction and community-building efforts.
Dr. Pérez-Guzmán joins colleagues Emily Barrett, Suvrat Dhanorkar, Bobby Harris, Ahmed Saeed, Ali Sarhadi, and Patricia Stathatou as part of the 2025 cohort.

Presentation at INFORMS 2025 Annual Meeting

Our lab showcased our work at the 2025 INFORMS Annual Meeting, presenting and participating in the MIF Poster Competition.
Meen-Sung Kim presented “An Optimization Model for Designing Urban Food Networks with Diverse Facility Types and Accessibility Constraints,” and Valentina Castañeda-Torres presented “Assessment of Primary Healthcare Accessibility in Rural Areas Considering Vulnerability.”
Both students also shared their work in the MIF Poster Competition, engaging with scholars across operations research and analytics. Their participation highlights the group’s commitment to advancing data-driven, equity-focused approaches to transportation, logistics, and community well-being.
Professor Pérez-Guzmán Presents at HOPE Research Workshop at Notre Dame

Professor Pérez-Guzmán presented our research at the HOPE Research Workshop hosted by the Humanitarian OPErations (HOPE) Lab at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, held September 25–27, 2025.
This invitation-only workshop brought together early-career scholars and senior faculty to discuss emerging work in humanitarian operations, nonprofit management, and frontline decision-making.
Professor Pérez-Guzmán presented our ongoing work, “Empirical Investigation of Post-Disaster Travel Behavior to Points of Distribution of Relief Supplies,” contributing insights on how communities navigate access to essential resources after disasters.
Our Lab at TRISTAN XII in Okinawa

We participated in TRISTAN XII, the 12th Triennial Symposium on Transportation Analysis, held from June 22–27, 2025, at Okinawa, Japan. Our lab professor, Dr. Sofía Pérez-Guzmán, presented “Optimization of Drone and Truck Operations for Socially Optimal Disaster Relief Distribution”, sharing our research with leading experts in transportation science from around the world.
Lab Visit to Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology

Professor Sofía Pérez-Guzmán, visited the Urban Freight Research Lab at the Department of Logistics and Information Engineering, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. She presented our team’s research on urban freight, disaster response logistics, and food systems, fostering valuable discussions and paving the way for future collaboration in urban freight research.

Dr. Sofía Pérez-Guzmán, presented the paper “Consumer Adoption of Sidewalk Autonomous Delivery Robots for Home Deliveries” at the 13th International Conference on City Logistics (CITY LOGISTICS 2025), held from June 11–13, 2025, at the Penang, Malaysia.
The paper, co-authored by Trilce Encarnación (University of Missouri–St. Louis), Julián Arellana (Universidad del Norte, Colombia), and Matias Enz (University of Missouri–St. Louis), explores consumer perspectives on sidewalk autonomous delivery robots (SADRs) and their potential to transform home delivery systems.
